About the Book

In a culture defined by speed and convenience, we easily forget the people who make the products we buy and use every day. This sense of detachment further leads to our own feelings of hopelessness. Why We Buy, and Why It Matters invites readers to slow down, to see consumption as a sacred act of connection, rather than merely a transaction.

David Gaines draws on personal reflection and cultural research, as well as his expertise as a small-business owner, to show how simple changes in habit can lead to a groundswell of conscious consumerism. With his unique perspective, he offers accessible steps and encourages readers to notice the human effort behind the everyday items we otherwise take for granted. Consumption is inherent to being human. And these small, intentional acts are an opportunity to honor the people who enhance our lives.

For anyone who longs for their daily choices to reflect their values, Why We Buy, and Why It Matters restores the sense of hope that’s been lost in our everyday interactions.
