The Life-Changing Benefits of Good-Old Fashioned Journaling
In today’s fast-paced world, with everything being so digital and hectic, it can be tough to make time for self-reflection and introspection. I’ve found that one of the best ways to take a breather and connect with myself is through the simple practice of journaling. Whether writing in my diary as a young child, scribbling in my notebooks in college, or jotting down professional wins in my “smile file”, journaling has been my go-to when I’m stressed, stuck, or even procrastinating. Journaling offers many benefits that can positively impact your mental, emotional, and even physical well-being. Here are just a few!
1. LETTING IT ALL OUT
Journaling provides a safe space for our emotions. It allows us to express our thoughts and feelings without judgment or constraint. It's like having a personal therapist, except it's way cheaper!
2. PUSHING PAST PROCRASTINATIONI’m a big fan of “messy action”, which is all about taking imperfect steps toward a goal or task without waiting for all the details to be in place. Messy action is the perfect antidote for procrastination, and I find that my journal is the perfect place to take messy action! Scribbling down some thoughts (any thoughts) allows me to uncover new ideas, perspectives, and solutions. The act of putting thoughts into words can help us get unstuck.
3. SAYING BYE-BYE TO STRESS AND HELLO TO CLARITYWriting in a journal can help alleviate anxiety and promote a sense of calm. By putting our thoughts on paper, we create distance from our worries, enabling us to view them objectively and find solutions more easily.
4. FINDING YOUR TRUE SELFJournaling helps us identify our values, beliefs, strengths, and areas for improvement. By documenting our experiences and insights, we better understand ourselves and our life's journey. We can track personal growth, overcome fears, and celebrate achievements.
5. UNLOCKING MINDFULNESSArguably the best reason to journal is that it can serve as a great mindfulness practice, allowing us to be fully present in the moment as we pour our thoughts onto the pages. When I journal in the morning, I find that I carry that ability to be present and intentional throughout the rest of my day.
There are five journaling exercises that I’ve always gravitated to, and I’ve captured them all in Reflect and Reset: An Embrace Your Life Journal. Whether it’s jotting down goals, prioritizing the things that matter, or celebrating wins, this gorgeous journal will create the perfect space to help you unlock the very best version of yourself. I hope you love it as much as I do!
